The journey
The oldest surviving Pantocrator has been at the monastery of Saint Catherine, at the foot of Sinai, for fourteen hundred years. It survived the war on images because it was too far away for anyone to reach it.
How to read it
The right hand is not waving: it blesses, and the fingers trace the letters of the name. The left holds the book closed, because the judgement has not yet been spoken.
When it is given
This is the icon of the home. The first one hung, the one that presides over the rest.
