Frequently asked questions

Everything people ask before buying an icon, answered plainly and with the workshop real figures. If something is missing, the chat answers it or you write to the workshop.

Which icon should I give?

There are two safe routes. First, the saint whose name the person bears: that is the gift that never misses and the one understood without explanation. Second, if you do not know it or they do not have one, the Virgin of Tenderness for an Orthodox home and the Pantocrator for a Catholic one. Every piece has a section saying exactly when it is given.

Catalogue

How long does it take to arrive?

Twenty one days of production plus transit, which runs from two to twelve days depending on destination. Counting back from your date: if you need it for a specific day, order five weeks ahead and it arrives comfortably. If you are tighter than that, write to us before paying and we will tell you honestly whether it makes it.

Shipping and returns

Is it hand painted?

No, and we say so before you ask. It is chromography on Nordic pine panel, with mixed technique polychromy and a hand finish in our workshop. We say it this plainly because some sell this as hand painting and it is not. What is ours: the panel, the ground, the finish and respect for the tradition, which is what separates an icon from a framed poster.

The workshop

What size is it?

Three formats: 16 by 24, 30 by 30 and 30 by 42 centimetres. To picture it without a tape measure: a sheet of A4 is 21 by 29.7, so the middle one is a little wider than A4 and the large one overflows it on all four sides. Every piece page has a scale drawing of the three formats next to a sheet of A4. They weigh between 0.6 and 1.8 kilos, so a single hook is enough.

Catalogue

How much is shipping?

From 6.90 to the Canaries and 8.90 to mainland Spain and the Balearics, up to 19.90 for the rest of Europe. It is a fixed price per order, not per piece: two icons pay one shipping charge. All are insured and tracked. In the basket you pick your country and see the exact total before giving a single personal detail.

Shipping and returns

When am I charged?

Nothing is charged when you confirm the order. You get the details by email, we write to you with the final amount and the shipping, and there is no charge until you accept it. If you need an invoice with your tax details, say so in the order notes.

Terms of sale

What if I do not like it?

Fourteen days to return it without giving reasons, counted from when you receive it. If it arrives damaged in transit it is insured: send us a photo and it is resolved at no cost to you. Commissioned pieces fall outside the right of withdrawal, and we say so before accepting them, not after.

Terms of sale

Where does it go and how is it cared for?

The panel comes with its fixing and a single hook is enough. Avoid direct sunlight, which dulls the colours within a few years, and bathrooms, because wood moves with humidity. Clean it with a dry cloth, never with products or water. In an Orthodox home the traditional place is the corner facing east.

Caring for your icon

Do you gift wrap it? Can I add a dedication?

Yes, and at no cost. In the basket there is a box saying it is a gift: tick it and no paper with the price goes into the box, and you can write a dedication of up to 160 characters, copied by hand onto a separate card. You can also tell us the day it has to be in place, and if we cannot make it we tell you before charging anything.

Caring for your icon

I want a piece that is not listed, or several

We take commissions. Tell us the devotion, the format and the date you need it. For parishes, communities and shops there are different terms by quantity and we invoice with full details: write to us saying how many pieces and for when, and we send a closed quote.

Parishes and communities

Where does each icon come from?

No icon is invented. Each one repeats a model that exists in a specific place you can visit: Sinai, Vladimir, Cappadocia, Assisi. The site has a map with the fifteen places and what stands there today. The pieces are produced in our workshop in Tenerife, Canary Islands.

The journey

Why does it take 21 days?

Because the sealing, the priming, the polychromy and the final coat each have to dry before the next goes on. Rushing it shows up two years later as a crack.

Which icon is given at an Orthodox baptism?

The icon of the saint whose name the child bears, if you know it. If not, the Virgin of Tenderness never fails in an Orthodox home. What matters is that it carries the correct inscriptions: a piece without letters is spotted instantly.

Can I order a piece that is not in the catalogue?

Yes. Write to us with the devotion, the format and the date you need it. Commissioned pieces fall outside the right of withdrawal, and we say so before accepting them.

How is it hung and where does it go?

The panel comes with its fixing and weighs between 0.6 and 1.8 kilos depending on format, so a single hook is enough. Avoid direct sunlight and bathrooms. In an Orthodox home the place is the corner facing east.

The three formats

Every piece can be ordered in the format you prefer: 16 x 24, 30 x 30 or 30 x 42 cm. Each piece and format carries its reference, shown on the piece page and in the basket, and we confirm the price by email within 24 working hours.
