Ecce homo is two Latin words, behold the man, spoken by Pilate in the praetorium. There is an arch with that name today on the Via Dolorosa, at the second station.
How to read it
The head is not bowed but raised, and the gaze goes upward, not toward the viewer. This is a pain that does not ask for pity.
