Saint Nicholas of Bari. Nicholas of Myra, bishop, blessing with the Gospel in his hand

What is there today

The basilica of Saint Nicholas has kept the bones of the bishop of Myra since 1087, brought by sailors from Bari in an expedition we would call a theft today. In the crypt there is an Orthodox chapel granted by the Dominicans, and it is one of the very few places in the world where Catholics and Orthodox pray daily under the same roof. Every ninth of May a phial is drawn of the liquid the relics give off.

Why this image comes from here

Nicholas of Myra is the saint East and West dispute and share at once, and Bari is the exact point where they touch. From his figure came two things that do not resemble each other: the stern icon of the bishop with the Gospel, and Santa Claus. The panel keeps the first one.

Pieces from this place

Saint Nicholas of Bari
Bishop of Myra in the fourth century, his relics reached Bari in 1087 and East and West have shared him ever since. After the Virgin, he is the saint with the most churches dedicated to him in the Orthodox world.
