Old City, Israel
Jerusalem
What is there today
The basilica of the Holy Sepulchre holds under one roof Golgotha, reached by a narrow stair, the stone where tradition places the anointing of the body, and the tomb. Six Christian confessions share the building under a settlement so delicate that the key has been kept for centuries by a Muslim family.
Why this image comes from here
Every scene of the passion is painted as happening here, and unlike almost any other sacred site, these places can be walked in twenty minutes. The Via Dolorosa crosses a lived in quarter with its shops open, and that mixture of grief and ordinary life is exactly what an icon of the passion tries to hold.

- The Lamentation
- Just inside the Holy Sepulchre there is a slab of rose stone where tradition places this moment. Pilgrims kneel to touch it before they look at anything else.
- Ecce Homo
- Ecce homo is two Latin words, behold the man, spoken by Pilate in the praetorium. There is an arch with that name today on the Via Dolorosa, at the second station.
- Our Lady of Sorrows
- This is the mother at the foot of the cross, on Golgotha, which today lies inside the Holy Sepulchre itself and is reached by a narrow stone stair.
