Sebastea

39.7477° N  ·  37.0179° E

Saint Blaise. Saint Blaise, bishop and physician, blessing, with the Gospel and the crozier

What is there today

Little of ancient Sebastea is visible: the modern city, Sivas, was built on top of it. What does survive is the name in the calendar of half of Europe, because the relics of its bishop travelled west with the crusades and reached Dubrovnik, where he is still the patron of the city and is carried in procession every third of February.

Why this image comes from here

He was a physician before he was a bishop, and everything else follows from that. Tradition says he saved a child choking on a fish bone, and that is why throats are blessed with two crossed candles on his feast. It is one of the most widespread devotions in Europe and one of the least explained: almost nobody knows why there are two candles.

Pieces from this place

Saint Blaise
He was a physician before he was a bishop, and he died in the persecution of Licinius at the start of the fourth century. His feast, the third of February, is one of the most widely kept in Spain, and in nearly every town throats are blessed and ring shaped cakes are handed out.
