Saint Peter of Betancur, Brother Peter. Brother Peter with the cross, and Mount Teide behind

What is there today

In Vilaflor, the highest village on the island, stands the house where Brother Peter was born, and next to El Médano you can visit the cave where he withdrew to pray, which still receives pilgrims on foot. In La Laguna, a World Heritage city, the font where José de Anchieta was baptised is preserved. And in Candelaria, facing the sea, the patroness of the Canaries.

Why this image comes from here

It is the workshop s home, and that is not why it is on the map: it is here because from this island came two saints who crossed the Atlantic, the first saint of the Canaries and the apostle of Brazil. Their portraits do not repeat an old panel, because there is none: they are painted here, where they were born, with the volcano and the sea behind.

Pieces from this place

Saint Peter of Betancur, Brother Peter
Born a shepherd in Vilaflor in 1626, he crossed the Atlantic and founded in Guatemala the first school and the first convalescent hospital for the poor in the Americas. He is the first saint of the Canaries, canonised in 2002, and his cave at El Médano still receives pilgrims on foot.
Saint José de Anchieta
Born in La Laguna in 1534, he landed in Brazil at nineteen and spent the rest of his life there: he is among the founders of São Paulo, wrote the first grammar of the Tupi language and died in the town that now bears his name. Francis canonised him in 2014.
