Jesus Walks on the Water. Christ holds Peter as he sinks, with the boat and the apostles behind

What is there today

It is a freshwater lake twenty one kilometres long, two hundred metres below sea level. On the northern shore are Capernaum, with Peter house excavated beneath a modern church, and the mount of the Beatitudes. The museum at Kibbutz Ginosar keeps a first century fishing boat that appeared in the mud when the water level dropped in 1986.

Why this image comes from here

The lake sits between hills and the wind drops in suddenly through the ravines: storms rise in minutes and die away just as fast. That, which still happens and the fishermen know, is what explains why an image of fear and an outstretched hand came from this place, and not a scene of calm.

Pieces from this place

Jesus Walks on the Water
The scene is not painted at the moment of the miracle but at the moment of failure: Peter is already sinking and has already called for help. The icon always chooses the instant when something is decided, not the instant when something is displayed.
