Mount of Olives, Jerusalem
Gethsemane
What is there today
In the garden stand eight olive trees whose roots have been carbon dated at more than two thousand years, so they are literally the same trees. The church beside them is called of All Nations and has violet windows so that inside it always seems to be night.
Why this image comes from here
It is the only scene in the gospel where he is seen asking something for himself, which is why the icon of the agony in the garden is the one given to someone going through something. It does not console with a happy ending: it keeps company in the moment before everything happens.
