Mother Teresa of Calcutta. Saint Teresa of Calcutta holding a child

What is there today

The Mother House is on Lower Circular Road and remains the seat of the Missionaries of Charity. The tomb is a slab of concrete in a low room, without ornament, with fresh flowers on it every day. Beside it the room where she lived is kept as it was: a bed, a table and a chair. You go in without paying and without an appointment.

Why this image comes from here

No ancient model exists for this devotion, and that is why the image is a portrait and not an icon in the strict sense. She is always shown the same way because that is how she was photographed a thousand times: the white sari with three blue bands that she designed herself, and a child in her arms. We say so here rather than call a devotional portrait an icon.

Pieces from this place

Mother Teresa of Calcutta
Canonised in 2016. This is not an icon in the strict sense and we are not going to call it one: it is a painted devotional portrait, with no tradition behind it, because of a twentieth century saint there are photographs and there is no need to invent a face.
